Brandling Arms, Gosforth High Street, Newcastle

We visited the Brandling Arms on a Sunday evening a couple of weeks ago. We have eaten here on a number of occasions and never really had any problems with my nut allergy (and have previously eaten dessert which I am often not able to in restaurants).

When we visited on this occasion, we were first greeted with a menu board which helpfully identified with an "n" those items with nuts in. I am usually really pleased with this as it makes sure that I don't set my heart on something on the menu to later find out it has nuts in. This time however, my husband and I questioned the integrity of the labelling when we realised that an almond cake was listed on the menu without a "n" symbol next to it. We decided to put this down to a typo and move on to decide what to order.

I was trying to be healthy so decided to order a rainbow salad with halloumi, red onion, courgette and lentils. My husband decided upon a cheese burger. It is not table service at the Brandling Arms so my husband went to the bar to order. When ordering he made the usual disclosure of having a nut allergy. He was met with angst and a roll of the eyes. The waitress asked "which one" and my husband replied both. She checked and returned with "its fine". My husband returned from the bar left with the feeling that my allergy was an inconvenience (something which I often feel at restaurants). For this experience and the incorrect labelling on the menu, we rate the Brandling Arms 2.5/5 stars.
