Cadbury's new peanut products

I've recently become aware that there are 2 new Cadburys products with peanuts in; Dairy Milk Big Taste Peanut Caramel Crisp and a Dairy Milk Peanut Butter Oreo Bar. This concerns me because of the perceived increased risk of cross contamination.

I have aways ate Cadburys products despite the "may contain nuts" warning which is listed on the majority of products. For me, peanuts are the most dangerous nut for me to come into contact with and therefore I previously took comfort in the lack of peanut based products that Cadburys produced. I therefore decided to contact Cadburys to ascertain what measures they have put in place to try to prevent cross contamination. This is the reply I received:

"Cadburys products are not guarantee to be nut-free as the factory would suggest. There may be a risk of cross-contamination in products which do not contain nuts in the recipe itself. We therefore use a "may contain nuts" alleged statement on pack to communicate these risks to the consumer. Some of our suppliers also use peanuts and therefore we cannot guarantee our products to be peanut free.

Presently, we do take all precautions to minimise the risks of nut cross-contamination in the factory. We clean the lines thoroughly at the start and end of the manufacture of each batch of product and use a dedicated nut depositor which can be removed from the line and cleaned thoroughly. Although we are satisfied that the controls running between one product and the next are robust, the only certain guarantee of absence would be on a nut-free site, as I'm sure you can appreciate.

To reiterate, we cannot guarantee that any product will be free of nut proteins as products are made in the same factory as nut containing products."

Whilst I appreciate the response from Cadburys, I do think this will make we think twice before eating Cadbury products. It's a shame that lines cannot be properly separated in factories and nut free zones created.
