Gusto Italian Restaurant, Newcastle
I've visited Gustos Italian restaurant on a number of occasions on Newcastle Quayside. I've also visited the restaurants based in Edinburgh and Didsbury. I've found on each occasion that the staff are very well trained when it comes to allergies and I have been shown on a number of occasions the allergy booklet that the staff have close to hand to identify which menu items have nuts in.
I think the staff are told that they must allow the customer to review this booklet and satisfy themselves of whether they are happy to order their chosen meal. I've been told on a few occasions that I have to be the one to make the decision. To be honest, I would prefer to be the one to review the booklet anyway because it makes me feel more comfortable having seen for my own eyes that the dish I am proposing to order is listed as having peanuts or any other nuts in.
My usual orders of smoked haddock rissotto and the gusto burger are absolutely fine. In fact most of the main courses on the menu look to be ok (save for one of the side dishes which have nuts in).
I would say however that quite a lot of the desserts have nuts in. This is a shame because I do like to try save some room for dessert.
On the last occasion that I visited Gusto I was particularly impressed by the service. When the manager found out I had a nut allergy he made sure he personally served me my meal. He then reassured me that the meal had been kept away from any nuts in the kitchen. He then checked on me part way through my meal to make sure I was ok.
I'd rate Gusto 4/5 for dealing with my nut allergy. I only take a point from them because it would be nice to have more choice of dessert!
